Spongebob Squarepants Rock Bottom Plunge

The Spongebob Squarepants Rock Bottom Plunge is a loop and corkscrew Euro-Fighter roller coaster located at Nickelodeon Universe in the Mall of America (MoA) in Bloomington, Minnesota. It is the shortest Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter roller coaster to date, standing at 67 feet tall; yet it has a 97 degree drop. It is the first roller coaster themed to Spongebob Squarepants, and opened with the Nickelodeon Universe grand opening on March 15, 2008. The ride features a vertical loop, a cutback, and heartline roll. The ride was installed by Ride Entertainment Group, who handles all of Gerstlauer's operations in the Western Hemisphere.

Ride[]

The ride starts when you roll around a turn and head straight for the vertical lift, which has a 90 degree angle. When you get to the top, you can briefly see the whole amusement park from a height of 67 feet (20 m) before you drop down 61 feet (19 m) at a 97 degree angle. Then, you soar up into a vertical loop. After that, there's a cutback. But first, there's this little tiny bump in your way. As you go over it, it provides you with some pretty good speed. Next, you go into the cutback, which is really fun. Then, you go into a Zero G Roll. After the Zero G Roll, you make a sharp left turn into the midcourse brakes. Next, you twist down into another drop that provides you with some good speed before heading through a turnaround that provides you with some decent laterals. Then, there's another helix and you lose a lot of speed before heading into the final brake run.

Trivia[]

  • The ride is based on the SpongeBob episode "Rock Bottom" (from Season 1) and features a prominently placed statue of SpongeBob and Patrick riding an orange bus down a 90 degree angle while holding a rubber glove over his head. Similarly, Spongebob Squarepants 4-D follows SpongeBob into Rock Bottom, in pursuit of a waylaid Krabby Patty.
  • On Ace of Cakes, Chef Duff delivered a cake to Mall of America and rode this roller coaster, then said, "It's actually a fun roller coaster."
  • The coaster sits on the former site of the Mystery Mine attraction which housed the SpongeBob SquarePants 4-D ride.
