Flyer Comet was a Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters wooden roller coaster located at Whalom Park in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, USA. Opened in 1940, it was torn down in October 2006.

HistoryEdit

Early HistoryEdit

When the 1923 Shooting Star was destroyed in 1938 by hurricane, Whalom staff hired the National Amusement Device Company and designer Vernon Keenan to create a new roller coaster for the park. The Flyer Comet, then simply called Comet opened in 1940. Many parts from the Shooting Star we're used to construct the ride. The Comet was the third coaster to be built at Whalom Park, and the last to be added to the park.

The Comet was later named the Flyer Comet.

FateEdit

Global Developments bought Whalom Park in 2001.

The lift motor and other mechanical portions of the ride were sold off years before the Flyer Comet's demolition. This require the track to be cut apart, this sealing the fate of the rides years prior to the demolition.

Global Developments started clearing the land on 10 October 2006, with the Flyer Comet being torn down on 18 October. The area is currently being redeveloped into Emerald Estates (Gated condominiums on the shores of Lake Whalom!).

ThemeingEdit

The rides entrance was decorated with comets/shooting stars. The Black Hole tunnel was added over a hilly section of track in 1990 and was meant to add to the space theme of the ride.
